It's 2a.m. and I can hear the nurses' footsteps down the corridors, with pools of light streaming out of their torches like car headlights in the rain. A Fish Without Lungs. The oxygen mask steps over my mouth like soft frog's feet and breathes into my lips sticky with blood. And I cough up pale white pills like tiny frog's eggs sticky and ripe in the dark. The air tastes heavy like pearls and vapour drops. Waterlogged I pray for gills.

I'm woken for medication I swallow them down, and listen for the sound of the grey trolley wheels squeaking across the cold linoleum. A small cup of fruit juice and a white bread roll are the only things that don't taste like antiseptic or anaesthetic.
